Air Force Academy Graduation – Thunderbirds

One of the great pleasures of living in Colorado Springs is that we are home to the United States Air Force Academy.  Doug and I are doubly blessed in that we live very close to the AFA and every May we get a spectacular free air show as the cadets graduate and the Thunderbirds pay tribute to the graduates!

We were nervous this year as we had 5 days of rain in a row- a somewhat rare, especially in May.  Aparently, there has been an outdoor ceremony ever year since 1959, so I’m sure students an parents alike were concerned that this year might break the long standng record.  Good ole Mother came through for us as Graduation Day was met with blue skies and faint traces of white clouds.

It is truly a spectacular site seeing the Thunderbirds fly over – again and again.  We get such a surge of patriotism as we see these gifted pilots fly in formation and perform precision acrobatics that only talent and practice, practice, practice can demon state.  The “show” starts a couple days in advance of graduation as the jets arrive here from their home at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.  We have a spectacular view from our house or anywhere in our neighborhood and they do their “fly-overs”.  Just south of our house they banki their turns and head over the valley and whoosh they are back again.

We always know when they are here.  Colorado Springs is a pretty quite town and especially on the north side of town where the Academy is and where we live.  You just don’t hear much noise except for an occasional lawn mower and the faint buzz of the small planes and practice gliders.  The sound is unmistakable.  My heartbeat always accelerates when the mild roar is heard and as I make a quick run to the windows to try to catch a glimpse of the F16′s.  We look forward to this every year.  And, now that graduation is over, we know they’ll be back this Fall. They come back every year for football season – just a couple of games – military academy against military academy.

There’s nothing like this.  Seeing people stand in the parks, in their yards,  or by special permission park on the side of the freeway.  For a few minutes we are all united.  No politics, no right or left.  We stand there and watch the best of the best and know that this is the greatest country in the world.

Sandals Royal Bahamian Spa Resort and Offshore Island

This Sandals is rated as the most elegant of all of the 12 Sandals Resorts.  There is good reason for it.  From the time you arrive and are greeted with champagne, to a formal room for afternoon teas, to the pampering in the spa, you know you’re in for a very special vacation that will live in your memory forever as one of the very best vacation decisions you’ve ever made.

The hotel itself is a 1940′s property that has been upgraded several times and with several million dollars.  It definitely has old world charm seen in the piano bar, billiard room, reception areas and some of the restaurants.  The rooms are tastefully furnished and decorated and depending on where located on the property can have spectacular views of the ocean and their offshore island.  There are plenty of restaurants with a wide variety of food choices day and night.  The entertainment is anything from mellow sax on the beach to island rock and dancing, movies, games and so much more.  No need to carry any cash on the property – tips are definitely included except at the spa.  And even there, the fees and tip can be added to your room and you pay as you check out.

This is our third Sandals Resort.  Each had something different to offer that makes each one unique.  See what makes this one so special.

Rooms

dscn0074One thing with Sandals is a wide variety of room choices.  You need to do your homework to understand the terminology and what comes with that choice for the money you are paying.  Not every room has a stellar view.  Big rooms/suites may be close to the pool and noisier than others.  Our advice is to determine what is most important to you – is it the view – a larger room with butler service – or just being there and on a budget.

Even standard rooms are beautiful.  King size beds, new big screen TV’s with cable,

Grounds and Gardens

There are gorgeous gardens woven throughout the resort.  Flowers bloom all year long.  Even if you are staying at the beach side of the resort don’t miss walking thru the villas towards the front of the property.  The gardens are mature so the hedges are high and the bushes full.

dscn0477All throughout the property you will notice that it is clean and tidy.  Staff members are always on the lookout for trash are grooming the beach and picking up empty dishes.  Everywhere you go it shows that they are meticulous about keeping the grounds in tip top shape.

Sandals recognized that the beach was nice, but guests were asking for more!  While we were there they were building a new beach in front of the Manor House!  You read that correctly – building a beach.  They were about 2/3 done when we arrived and only 1 barge of clean, near white sand was unloaded during our stay, but it was nice enough for walking on and plenty big enough for wedding pictures!  I’d love to see it when done as I think the added space for guests will be an added bonus!

Restaurants

dscn0469There are ten restaurants at this Sandals Resort; each with its own style and ambience.  They range from the very casual to elegant but the service at all of them is special.  They serve conch in so many different ways that it becomes a game to figure out what other possible ways there could be.  Don’t miss the Baccarat for either breakfast of eggs benedict and caviar to dinner of duck and lamb.  There are a wide variety of choices at every meal and remember – it’s all inclusive so don’t be afraid to ask for a little of this and a little of that!

Housekeeping

We found the housekeeping staff to be some of the best at any place we have ever been.  Very friendly, respectful of the “Do Not Disturb” signs and excellent at all the little things that keep a room very clean.  We never ran out of anything and even the tiled patio was swept clean every day.

Spa

Now, I’m not a big spa person except for pedicures.  This is one thing I do at resorts just so I can feel what real pampering is all about.  I read all the literature about the Red Lane Spa and saw a huge variety of massages, skin treatments, hair and nail salon services and products.  So, I think you’ll find some spa experience that will suit you. My pedicure was top notch all the way.  I went on the wild side with the toe-nail polish – kind of iridescent shades of pink/blue/yellow/green!  It was definitely “beach” polish and very fun.

Service

Say hi to Luke the Ops manager. Luke, when you’re there!  He has a delightful British accent, has worked at other Sandals resorts and knows how to keep a place running smooth by being very hands on.    We ran into him one of our first nights trying to find our way around.  He took the time to talk to us, explain the Sandals philosophy and walked us to our destination.  Another morning I caught him repairing one of the catamarans, so don’t be surprised if you run into him on one of the dive boats !  Stefan, the restaurant manager, checks in with guest during meals to make sure you have everything you need.  More than once he stopped at our table and even refreshed our drinks.  We saw Stefan at almost every restaurant while we were there – always smiling and always ensuring guest enjoyment.  Michael, the resort manager, walks the property frequently.  He, too, is very approachable, kind and you just have to love the European accent.

From the welcoming staff, to the guys at the dive shop, bartenders and grounds keepers; they understand that people pay a little (ok a lot) more for the Sandals experience and do everything they can to make sure that it is memorable.

Outstanding Features

Sandals Cay Offshore Island

dsc_8529Just a 5 minute boat ride away is the Offshore Island.  Don’t miss this.  While the whole island is not Sandals property they have all you need for a great time.  There is a restaurant, bar, pool, a nice beach, fun music and the spa.  Take time to walk thru the gardens and trails to the point of the island to see all the little thatched cabanas.  You can make an appointment for your spa treatment and enjoy it right on the island with an amazing ocean view, up close and personal!  The boats come and go every hour so you can stay just for lunch, a walk or stay all day and enjoy the seclusion of your own spot on the beach.

Denver Botanic Gardens – Spring Update

dsc_8935

Irises at the Denver Botanical Gardens

It’s been a few months since we last made the trek to Denver to see the Botanical Gardens. In my last post I was telling you about the construction going on there – and it still going on! I venture to guess that it will continue for at least another year – but don’t let that stop you from visiting!!! The flowers are in bloom and gorgeous!

I have a couple of favorite areas that I *have* to visitevery time. It’s called the Lilac Garden, but I always see irises and lilies. This trip was all about the irises. OMG! Still considered  early in the season, I was astonished at the number and variety in bloom. My two favorite shades are the peach/coral and the lavender/purple ones. Those are just *my* favorite colors. The yellow and white are equally magnificent. Then there are those is the darker colors of brown and gold and even black ones (almost, but not quite in bloom). The colors and shades just seem to be endless. I didn’t see any lilies in bloom this trip, but by June there should be a great start to a color bonanza!

My other favorite area is the rose garden, but we were too early for blooms on this trip. I’m always impressed with the plentiful varieties and magnificent colors. I’m hopeful that our next trip will yield both lilies and roses!

Even with construction in many parts of the Gardens ,the walkways are always clean, staff is there to answer questions and noise is at a minimum. Structures are taking shape – the new parking garage and the visitor’s center/entrance are going to be very nice. It will give the whole experience an updated look and feel.

Until next time!
